DESCRIZIONE   In December 2015, the New Orleans City Council voted to remove four Confederate monuments from public grounds. A forceful group of critics protested the decision, and fearing retaliation, no crew would agree to remove the statues.

Sesto e ultimo appuntamento della rassegna Mondovisioni, lunedì 14 febbraio alle 21 nel Teatro Fucina Machiavelli, con il documentario "The neutral ground" di CJ Hunt (USA 2021).

A New Orleans si discute la rimozione di quattro monumenti confederati, residenti bianchi e neri sono divisi sul significato delle statue: per alcuni devono sparire, altri si oppongono con fervore. Quando le minacce di morte fermano le rimozioni, il regista e comico CJ Hunt si mette in viaggio per capire perche´ un esercito sconfitto nel 1865 abbia ancora cosi` tanto potere immaginario nell’America contemporanea. Mentre la controversia sui monumenti si espande a livello nazionale, ed emergono da una parte il movimento suprematista bianco e dall’altra Black Lives Matter, attraverso un mix di umorismo e giornalismo investigativo The Neutral Ground diventa una toccante esplorazione del razzismo e dell’eredita` della schiavitu`, con cui parte dell’America deve ancora fare i conti.

Seguirà un approfondimento moderato dal giornalista di Heraldo Ernesto Kieffer e vedrà la presenza di Giovanni Frigo, psicologo psicoterapeuta e antropologo culturale, e di Irene Tommasi, medico psicoterapeuta.

COMMENTO   From Charleston the Charlottesville and beyond, a journey C. J. Hunt takes for himself, bringing us along as he confronts the honesty with which he needs to face the racism the US fights so hard not to face. Starting after the massacre in Charleston inspired a new (but not, I think, the first) effort in New Orleans to remove monuments to the Confederacy and its leaders, with many voices and sides seen and heard from, before Hunt begins to focus himself and our journey on new paths. Familiar history, historical lies, and the beginnings of telling more history, some as it happens. Humor, tragedy, anger, triumph; hope. Masterfully done, a journey I am glad to have taken.
